The Waterloo Memorial Shoot

These notes are intended to clarify the rules and conditions, as well as to make the shoot open to as wide a group of members as possible.

1 - Firearms:

Any military flintlock, smooth bore musket, original or replica, of a type contemporary with Brown Bess. That is, any musket originally manufactured between 1700 and 1840.

2 - Conditions:

  • Twelve shots fired in a twenty minute detail at Weeton (25 metres). Fired from the trench

  • Elbows may be rested, but no other support permitted

  • Balls may be wadded and patched, but no sabots are permitted

  • Best ten shots to count

  • 50 per cent rule applies

3 - Scoring:

Target to be a standard 25 metre target. Shots in the red to count 5 points, shots in the 5 and 6 rings to count 4 points, shots in the 4 ring to count 3 points, shots anywhere else on the target rectangle to count 2 points.

Maximum score 50. In the event of a tie the highest number of hits in the red will decide. If still a tie hits in the red will be scored normally (10, 9, 8, 7).

4 - Number of Competition Entry Attempts:

There is no limit to the number of times a competitor may shoot the match, but any re-shoot cancels any previous shoot. Targets will be numbered and marked with the date/time of shooting.

5 - Musket Availability:

Muskets may be borrowed, so if you want to shoot and have no suitable musket, get borrowing. Bob H will make his Brown Bess fully available, it would help if other owners of suitable firearms would co-operate in this. If you need a loader, that too can be arranged.

6 - Shooting dates:

Originally, the idea was that the shoot would take place on the Weeton date closest to the 18th June. This puts a severe restriction on the number who can take part. It has now been agreed that the shoot will be available on any date at Weeton from mid May to early November, just before the Club Competitions begin.
